Preeclampsia, also referred to as toxemia, is a problem that occurs in some women during pregnancy. It can happen during the second half of pregnancy and involves the combination of high blood pressure, swelling, and large amounts of protein in their urine. Preeclampsia is more common in a woman’s first pregnancy and in women
whose mothers or sisters had preeclampsia. The risk of preeclampsia is higher in women carrying multiple babies, in teenage mothers, and in women older than age forty. Other women at risk include those who had high blood pressure or kidney dis- ease before they became pregnant. The cause of preeclampsia isn’t known, although nutritional deficiencies appear to be a major factor.
Plenty of water is important, as is adequate protein.
Essential fatty acids, as found in fish, nuts and seeds, and ground flaxseeds, are rec- ommended.
Food to Avoid
Avoid foods that are high in trans-fatty acids, as found in fried food (cooked vegetable oils), margarine, and some packaged foods.
