Hormonal changes and increased fluids can cause your hands, legs, and feet to swell, especially in the later months of pregnancy. Although many women experience fluid retention, you should always have it checked out by a doctor, as its sometimes a symptom of a serious disorder.




Recommended Food

As you lower your intake of salt, you must also increase your consumption of potas- sium. A combination of excess sodium and a deficiency in potassium has been found in many people with hypertension. Good sources of potassium include apples, asparagus, cabbage, oranges, tomatoes, bananas, kelp, and alfalfa.


Food to Avoid

Restrict your intake of salt. Obviously, you should avoid table salt, but you should also stay away from processed or junk food, both of which contain alarming amounts of sodium.



Super Seven Prescriptions—Fluid Retention


Super Prescription #1    Dandelion leaf (Taraxacum officinale)

With your doctors supervision, take 3 ml or 300 mg twice daily. Dandelion leaf is a gentle diuretic.

Super Prescription #2    B-complex vitamins

Vitamin B6 and other B-complex vitamins may help reduce edema. Take 50 mg twice daily.

Super Prescription #3    Homeopathic Natrum Muriaticum

Take 3 pellets of a 6x potency three times daily. It is particularly indicated if you have a strong desire for salt and the fluid retention is worse from being in the sun or from heat.

Super Prescription #4    Vitamin C

Take 500 mg twice daily. Vitamin C improves the lymph flow.

Super Prescription #5    Vitamin B6

Take 50 mg daily under the guidance of a doctor. Vitamin B6 has been found to reduce water retention, most likely due to its function in helping liver metabolism.

Take 500 mg twice daily. Quercitin is a flavonoid that improves circulation.

Take 200 mg twice daily. Garlic has mild anti-edema properties.

Other Recommendations


Regular exercise will minimize swelling. A daily walk or swim is a good idea.

Swollen feet are uncomfortable, but tight shoes are even worse. For the duration of your pregnancy, you may want to wear shoes that are larger than your usual size.
